Paper Introduction: The American Civil Liberties Union
and the Sociology of its Organization
The American Civil Liberties Union arose during World War I and has been at the center of controversy since that time. its birth came from the impetus to defend free speech, and its involvement in some of the most famous events in American history--the internment of the Japanese-Americans in World War II, the anti-communist witch hunt, the fight for abortion rights, and many other causes--has made it one of the most important and unpopular organizations in this country (Walker, 1990, p. 3). It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the origin and history of the ACLU, the organization's focus on current problems, and aspects of the organization in terms of concepts drawn from theories of sociology of organizations.
