Paper Abstract:
Examines major league strike, issues, union & management stands, short-term & long-term effects on players, fans, owners.

Paper Introduction:
This study will examine the 1994 strike in major league baseball in 1994 and the long-term results of that strike. The argument of the study is that while the strike was devastating to baseball in 1994, shortening two seasons in 1994 and 1995, by 1998 the long-term damage done to the game had been almost entirely eliminated. The basic issue of the salary cap was one which in the first place was not of great interest to fans, and whatever damage was done by the strike was undone in large part because of the excitement generated in 1998 by the home-run race between Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire, but also because. for better or worse, baseball remains the national pastime and fans of the sport eventually forget, or at least forgive, and return to the game with as much fervor as ever.

Paper Abstract:
Positive & negative effects, gender issues, competition, role of parents & coaches, moral development, physical requirements, injuries, protective equipment, diet.

Paper Introduction:
Controlled sports permeate the everyday life of American society. Even young children are affected through their exposure to organized athletics, which include baseball/softball, soccer, football, karate/judo, wrestling, field/ice hockey, lacrosse, boxing, and rugby. Participation in such sports can have both a positive and negative effect on the lives of children. Griffin (1998) offers research and personal insight on organized athletics in an attempt to help parents make decisions about their children and sports. One of the main issues the author addresses is what impact sports have on the social, physical, and moral development of children. The basis of this book is that children see sports as more than just enjoyment and the enhancement of physical skills, particularly for the child who is an enthusiastic participant: "sports is about growing up,

Paper Abstract:
Examines violence among spectators around world, social & psychological causes, geography, alcohol, possible preventive measures.

Paper Introduction:
Numerous incidents of violence at sporting events in Europe and the United States have increased concerns that the act of watching certain sporting events, especially those involving violence such as Ice Hockey, Rugby, or Football, creates in some spectators the impetus for violent behavior at or immediately following the event. Fans trying to support their team and challenge supporters of the opposing team sometimes get carried away and commit violence on those opposing fans. In some cases, supporters of the winning or losing team carry their feelings out into the street and commit acts of vandalism and violence in the immediate area. The issue this raises is how it can be controlled, and theorists are considering what practical psychological strategies can be developed and implemented to curb spectator violence for these sporting events.

Paper Abstract:
Examines economics, ethics, functions, competitiveness of agents, comparing reality with film [Jerry Maguire] & focusing on pro football.

Paper Introduction:
This research examines the profession of being a sports agent in the National Football League. How to start a business of being a sports agent will be discussed, along with popular myths and the hard realities of the profession. There is a moment in the Tom Cruise movie, Jerry Maguire, where Cruise's rival, a predatory sports agent with the ethical code of a stepped-on scorpion, glibly assures a promising young athlete that there is nothing he is not prepared to do to make the boy happy. "I will kill, maim, rape and pillage for you," the agent solemnly swears. Which is close to the public's perception of agents, slick-talking wheeler-dealers who make their living off the sweat of their celebrated but fiscally hapless protégés. "Sharks in suits" is how the eponymous Cruise character describes the profession in

Paper Abstract:
Examines positive & negative social, physical, psychological, emotional & educational effects of competitive sports.

Paper Introduction:
Society rarely questions the value of youth participation in sports. Many parents force their children to play sports, believing that such activity instills positive values like teamwork, cooperation, and sportsmanship. Mandatory participation in sports is a part of the physical education curriculum in most elementary schools. Yet sports participation can contribute to lowered self-esteem and aggressive, antisocial behavior in some children. Competitive sports reflect society's value system. Since the United States, for the greater part of its history, has not felt the menace of foreign aggression and has no universal system of military training, sports fulfill the need to develop in youth the principles of offensive and defensive ability. Competition is based on struggle, the survival of the fittest: "Youth sports

Paper Abstract:
Critical review of work on sports as symbol of promises & deceptions of Amer. Dream, focusing on differences between women & men in sports.

Paper Introduction:
Elliott J. Gorn and Warren Goldstein, in A Brief History of American Sports, explore not only the historical evolution of sports from the colonial days through the early 1990s, but just as importantly "the entanglements of sports with life, and of how confused the real accomplishments of players on the field become with American culture's giddy dreams" (xii). The underlying argument of the book is that sports have come to represent the American Dream itself, in terms of both that Dream's promises and its deceptions. This study will provide a brief overview of the book and will then focus on American sports as they relate to gender. Although the book is thoroughly documented and deals in some detail with American sports history, it "is by no means a comprehensive survey" of that history, but focuses instead on the

Paper Abstract:
Examines political, propagandistic, racial & bureaucratic aspects of Hitler-managed Games from acquisition to media coverage to performances.

Paper Introduction:
Though it may seem odd, in retrospect, that Hitler and his Nazi party allowed the 1936 Olympics to be held at Berlin, this is only because subsequent legends of the event obscure the true propaganda value the games had for the Reich. Both in terms of inspiring the German people and in impressing Germany's good will and increased power on other nations, the National Socialist agenda was forwarded by the superbly managed Eleventh Olympiad. The question then arises, why did the United States and the principal European nations willingly provide Hitler with such a platform? It may be argued that in the early 1930s the true extent of the Nazi threat could not be foreseen. But the historical record demonstrates that it took a considerable degree of willful blindness toward Nazi ideology, policies, and actions for other nations to participate at Berlin.

Paper Abstract:
Examines causes & effects of criminal, immoral & violent behavior, focusing on the rewards for such behavior.

Paper Introduction:
For many professional athletes, unethical behavior has become the norm. Whether they are trying to sneak in a punch, shouting obscenities, fighting, throwing tantrums, or biting off opponents' ears, professional athletes are, increasingly, behaving like undisciplined children. Behavior in which the individual's interests are placed before everyone else's, behavior that violates the rules by which the game (or business or profession) is to be conducted, and behavior that violates the rights and interests of others, is unethical. In professional sports, such behavior is, increasingly, rewarded, applauded, and expected. And, it is seldom discouraged in any effective manner. This growing problem stems, in large part, from the overwhelming commercialization of professional sports in the last few decades. Today, athletes are better paid, owners make bigger

Compares rival professional basketball coaches' philosophies of life & sports, techniques, influences, backgrounds, leadership.

Paper Introduction:
Pat Riley and Phil Jackson could not have more different styles of leadership and coaching in the National Basketball Association. This research examines some of the key differences in their leadership styles and notes the conflicts that have arisen from those differences. During one championship game against the Bulls, Pat Riley erupted. Two quick technical fouls sent him to the dressing room, necessitating a long walk from one end of the floor to the other, right past the Chicago Bulls bench. With every step Riley took, Bulls Coach Phil Jackson's face tightened. He tried to look down, then away. Jackson was trying not to laugh and everybody could see it. As Riley finally passed the Bulls and disappeared, Jackson could not help himself any longer. He laughed. Actually, it was more like a giggle. They still cannot play nice, Jackson

Paper Abstract:
Effects of high altitude on athletic performance, training needs, oxygen use & availability, endurance, dangers.

Paper Introduction:
Altitude and its effects on athletic performance will be discussed with regard to the following subtopics: adaptations the body makes as a person goes from sea level to a high altitude; changes brought about by aerobic compared to anaerobic exercises at high altitude; and the effects, positive or negative, of training at altitude. A drastic case study will be cited to demonstrate the magnitude of the effect of altitude change on physiology. At altitudes of over 5,000 feet, the ability to perform physical work is affected--the higher the altitude, the more severe the effects. In general, one can expect a reduction in endurance capacity as measured by the maximal oxygen consumption of 3 to 3.5 percent for every 1,000 feet ascended above 5,000 feet. Work performance and maximum oxygen consumption are

Paper Introduction:
Gallaudet University (pronounced Gall-uh-DET) was created by the United States government in 1864 to educate the deaf. Today Gallaudet remains the only liberal arts college for the deaf not only in the United States, but in the world. Sports have always had an important place in the school’s curriculum, most usually at an intramural level, but Gallaudet athletes have also competed against athletes from other schools. The school fielded its first football team in 1883 and that team defeated Georgetown, 15-0. Today Gallaudet University’s Football Web Page pays tribute to that first victory in these words: “Pride and determination are two words that appropriately describe Gallaudet University since the first Bison football team defeated Georgetown in its debut in 1883.” The 1996 season was the school’s 102nd season of football.

Paper Abstract:
Examines sport as popular social & patriotic glue, decline of players' quality, compared to WWI, players' military service, attendance, owners' views.

Paper Introduction:
Baseball was one of the most significant forms of popular culture in the United States at the time of the Second World War. It was, by far, the most popular sport in the country, and its stars were local and, often, national heroes. It was a truly national pastime, as professional teams from the large northeastern and midwestern cities competed with each other, minor league teams drew crowds in small towns all over the country, and radio listeners swelled the number of fans. A great body of popular lore had grown up around the subject, and the identification of baseball and American values had become axiomatic. As with any manifestation of popular culture, baseball both revealed and determined what American society valued most. But, when World War II arrived, it was inevitable that baseball would be hit much harder than other popular culture

The ball game held a central, primary part in the lives of Mesoamerican people. It was played across a wide geographic area by many different peoples. The ball courts began emerging in the Maya lowlands, at the end of the Middle Formative period (Ashmore 496). There is much, about the ball game, which is only theorized or speculated. Gender-based inequities in university athletic programs, provisions & ineffectiveness of Title IX as legal remedy, economics, social aspects.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION Gender roles in Western societies have been changing rapidly in recent years, with the changes created both by evolutionary changes in society, including economic shifts which have altered the way people work and indeed which people work as more and more women enter the workforce, and by pressure brought to make changes because of the perception that the traditional social structure was inequitable. Gender relations are part of the socialization process, the initiation given the young by society, teaching them certain values and creating in them certain behavior patterns acceptable to their social roles. These roles have been in a state of flux in American society in recent years, and men and women today can be seen as having expanded their roles in society, with women entering formerly male dominions and

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION Colleges and professional sports teams alike pay coaches and scouts to find a certain number of players each year for sports teams. College coaches try to find likely prospects to add to their roster and perhaps to catch the eye of the public in a way that redounds to the credit of the school. Professional scouts watch players in college in an attempt to find those who could make the leap from amateur to professional sports. There are rules by which both types of scouts have to live, and the players as well have to follow certain rules as they decide what college to attend or what team to join. Questions are often raised as to the ethics of certain practices undertaken by coaches or scouts, but all in all the system seems to work. At the same time, those with prospects for recruitment need to be careful because there

Sociocultural analysis of racist attitudes & practices in college & pro athletics, players & management, educational & scholarship aspects, institutional bias.

Paper Introduction:
INTRODUCTION The problem of racism is not specifically an American problem, though Americans have made it into an important political and social issue as they have tried to find a way to eliminate racism from their society. Racism occurs whenever there is a dominant racial group that uses its position to discriminate against a minority racial group on the basis of racial characteristics. Traditionally, discrimination has been seen as a creature of prejudice, and until the late 1960s the dominant perspective among social science analysts of discrimination was that prejudice and intolerance were the causes of discriminatory actions. Other observers have focused on individual racists and have seen the problem as the individual motivated by hatred of a given "outgroup." Still others consider

Examines causes, league response, financial issues, comparison with baseball strike & outcome of 1995 players' fight to decertify union.

Paper Introduction:
In the fall of 1995 the National Basketball Association was threatened by several of its own members who wanted to decertify the union just as the union was negotiating a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Decertification would mean the end of the union, and this drive was being spurred by several big-name p-layers who believed that the players would be better served by the protections under federal antitrust rules. Others point out, however, that the end of the union would also mean the end of certain benefits and even pensions for many players. The effort by these basketball players challenges the idea of sports unions in general and raises a number of questions concerning the supposed necessity for decertification, the relationship between the state of athletic bargaining agreements and other agreements, and the degree to which this area of work differs from others in

Paper Introduction:
Effects of Caffeine in Sports-Related Performance The drug, caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine), is consumed worldwide. It is found in tea, coffee, and soft drinks. Caffeine is also a common ingredient in headache medications and appetite suppressants. The drug's primary physiologic effects involve the central nervous system: Caffeine is a stimulant. In addition, over the past several decades, the compound's influence on sports-related performance has also been investigated. Various studies indicate that caffeine may improve endurance performance during long-term, low-to-moderate intensity aerobic exercise. It is thought that this effect may result from an increase in metabolic efficiency. Some investigators believe that caffeine enhances the utilization of blood borne free fatty acids. Unfortunately though, such factors as a lack of

GENDER DISCRIMINATION IN COLLEGE AND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS This research paper discusses gender or sex discrimination in college and professional sports. In the 1970s and 1980s, female athletes made substantial progress toward achieving equal rights in collegiate athletics through litigation and the threat of litigation. Women coaches made less progress. The entire movement suffered some loss of momentum after the late 1980s because of more restrictive court rulings, funding problems and other factors. Female athletes have hardly made a dent in professional sports, except in certain non-contact sports such as tennis, golf and track. Dainty Things Until the broader womens movement began to assert itself in the 1960s, little progress was made toward securing equal rights

Coeducational classes mandated by 1972 law, pros & cons, teacher & student attitudes, biological issues.

Paper Introduction:
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 sought to eliminate sex discrimination in the public school systems throughout the United States (Lirgg, 1993, p. 324). Title IX, as the act is commonly called, prohibited the offering of same-sex courses and programs. All-girl home economics, all-boy industrial-arts, and same-sex physical education classes were no longer an option for school districts receiving public money. Coeducational physical education had arrived. The social, psychological, and physiological aspects of this change in policy, with regard to physical education, had not been addressed prior to the passage of the legislation. The legal mandate, Title IX, was made before all the risks and benefits, to the children, could be assessed. The purpose behind the passage of Title IX was to give an

Paper Abstract:
Athletics as big business, role of TV, illegal payments, examples of scandals & punishments, pressure to turn pro, academic issues, reforms, sanctions, legalizing athletes' pay.

Paper Introduction:
Introduction College sports are big business. A college or university with a successful football or basketball team can leverage its sports success to increase its donations from alumni, and television revenue from televised football and basketball games can significantly contribute to a school's operating budget. Because of this, recruiting efforts can be intense as schools seek to attract the most promising high school and community college players, and the motivation to violate rules set down by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) can be high. This research examines the economic impact of sports, particularly football, on colleges and universities, recent scandals involving players and coaches which have rocked the NCAA, and considers whether or not players at the collegiate level should be paid for t

Anatomical & physiological processes involved in individual's preparation for action.

Paper Introduction:
Punting A Football: The Anatomy and Physiology Complex physical endeavors generally require the coordinated functioning of numerous organs and organ systems. Punting a football, for example, involves the body's special sensory apparatus and nervous system. Through the appropriate neuronal stimuli, an athlete's respiration and heart rate may be elevated. Such adjustments provide for the increased metabolic requirements associated with exertion. Only when these physiologic needs are met, can the athlete perform optimally. A punter about to kick a football would obviously hear the roar of the crowd. The process of hearing requires several different anatomic structures. These include the external, middle, and inner ear structures. The external ear consists of a flap of elastic cartilage known as the auricle, the external

Paper Abstract:
Explores nature of abuse against women & links glorification of institutionalized violence in sports & abuse by sports heroes.

Paper Introduction:
Athletes who beat their wives are part of the bigger picture of spousal abuse in the U.S.; the O.J. Simpson case has brought wife abuse by athletes to center stage in the national discussion of what some feminists are even terming a national epidemic. The fact that violent sports such as football contribute to male athletes' aggression will be examined, as well as the general factors contributing to wife abuse. It will be seen that cases of wife abuse ignite mass outrage, yet the topic fades from the national debate unless it becomes re-ignited by the celebrity status of the perpetrators. All wife abuse (the abuse is almost exclusively one directional) is cause for alarm and immediate intervention, yet because of factors of fear and secrecy, many cases go unreported. While only those cases which make the evening news seem to
